What is the Myofascial Cupping Technique?
It involves the gliding of negatively pressured cups over the body with the assistance of massage cream and can be accompanied by joint mobilisation. It is a very different technique to traditional cupping and importantly, marking is NOT part of the desired treatment outcome.
It is unique in that it ‘lifts’ and separates soft tissue, known as negative or tensional pressure. This is turn can increase nutrient-rich blood supply to the tissue while giving a gentle passive stretch to the underlying soft tissue.
How does it work?
By creating a Negative Pressure (tensional) above the surface of the tissues, we decrease the atmospheric pressure allowing the tissue to be lifted and thus causing changes in pressure beneath the skin including the muscle and surrounding fascia. Importantly, our gliding technique creates a traditional Myofascial Release technique (push/compression effect) using the leading rim of the cup, which is then followed by a ‘lifting’ negative pressure over the same area (pull effect). As the cup leaves the area we once again create a push/compression effect.
What are the benefits?
The Myofascial Cupping technique provides profound benefits, particularly with assisting the body in:
- maintaining Range of Motion,
- eliminating Myofascial Trigger Points and
- reducing restrictive and sometimes painful fascial adhesions commonly found from repetitive movement originating from sports and the workplace.
- By reducing fascial adhesions, while encouraging optimal hydration levels of soft tissue, Myofascial Cupping can assist in reducing the incidence of injury and maintaining functional soft tissue.
Kinesiology Taping
What is RockTape & Kinesiology Taping?
RockTape is a brand of kinesiology tape. It was first used by chiropractors and acupuncturists in Japan and, due to its incredible success rate, quickly spread across the globe.
Kinesiology taping (or kinesio taping) is the application of a thin, stretchy, cotton-based therapeutic tape that can benefit a wide variety of injuries and inflammatory conditions. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows it to be worn without binding, constricting or restriction of movement.
How does it work?
When applied correctly, RockTape’s unique elasticity causes the skin to form convolutions and wrinkle. This decompresses the tissue immediately below the skin. It is believed that this has three main effects:
- Fluid effect- improving blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area
- Mechanical effect- improving the slide and glide between tissue layers
- Neurological effect- altering the perception of pain and improving body awareness.
Some of the conditions that Rocktape can help address are listed below:
•Achilles tendonitis • Plantar fasciitis
• Jumpers knee (PFS) • ACL/MCL issues
• Rotator cuff • Groin and hamstring pulls
• Lower back issues • Shin splints
• Tennis and golf elbow • Low Back or other muscle pain associated with pregnancy
• Postural correction
What are the key symptoms that RockTape might assist?
- Muscle pain or cramping – e.g. lower back or calf muscles
- Joint pain – e.g. shoulder or knee
- Poor posture
- Inflammation or bruising
How is Kinesology Tape Different from Conventional Strapping Tape?
Kinesiology tape differs from other types of strapping tape in both its form and function. Most types of strapping tape are non-elastic, and are wrapped tightly around an injured joint or muscle to provide rigid support and restrict movement. They can only be worn for short periods of time, after which they must be removed to restore movement and circulation.
Kinesiology tape differs. It has unique elastic properties that allows the kinesiology tape to provide dynamic support. This provides an almost second skin that protects your joints and muscles. Plus, due to its amazing elastic properties, kinesiology tape allows full motion of your body parts.
Kinesiology tape can be worn during intense exercise, in the shower or even swimming.
